Gojira Returns (The Return of Godzilla)

After a decade of waiting and 60 years since the original release, Godzilla has finally returned to the big screen.  Before I go into my review of this movie I am going to give a little background history. Godzilla is considered a kaiju or strange creature. The original Godzilla was released in 1954 only a few years after the end of WWII. Lastly this is only the 2nd film produced by Americans, the 1st being Godzilla 2000. Now on to the review.

When I think of Godzilla in today’s time I think of an action packed movie. I am looking to see this creature pretty much have an all out brawl against an opponent. If that is the case this is not the movie for you. This movie actually lives up to its roots and does not focus solely on action but more on plot and anticipation.

The beginning was pretty interesting by setting up the plot that would become a big factor later on in the movie.  Although  after about 20 minutes in the story started to become rather dry. I found myself dosing off quite a few times. I talked to other people who saw it and they said the same thing. After about another 20 minutes the action finally starts to pick up.  Nearly halfway through the movie the story on the ground has gotten rather boring and I was pretty much looking forward to seeing Godzilla fight. When the fight scene finally kicked in I was rather happy. They really built up the anticipation for the fight scene and I have to say it was well worth the wait.

The acting by Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad & Malcom in the Middle) was the best acting in the whole movie. I really felt his story and he had me hooked. A nice back up was by Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) he has me interested enough to keep me entertained but his wife and son’s little side story was straight boring and I found myself caring less and less every time they popped up.

Lets not forget the CG since this is a big thing nowdays. Godzilla was beautifully done along with his co-stars. It really goes to show you how far CG has come in the last decade. To be able to express so much detail was amazing and the angles really showed how big Godzilla really is.  His infamous roar really reminded me of a T-Rex from Jurassic Park which I in fact liked a lot.

Overall I would recommend old school Godzilla fans to go see this movie. All others looking to see it for the action, well this is not the movie for you. Me personally I would not go see it again but that’s just me.

Captain America: Winter Soldier

Greetings ATG fans, Jake here with a first time movie review of Captain America: Winter Soldier. I am presuming that since all of you are geeks this movie is already well known to you, if not stop reading this now and go see it. The movie is well worth the money, and arguably the best marvel movie to date (though not my number 1 pick). A warning, this review will contain at least partial spoilers as I pick apart what I liked and did not like. I will start with what I did not like, so I can end on a positive.
